Running on empty, the signs I kept ignoring
Burnout didn't arrive with a breakdown. It arrived slowly, in all the small ways I kept telling myself I was fine.
Here's what my burnout looked like: I kept going. That was the whole symptom. I kept doing everything I was supposed to do, showing up, responding, producing, being present, while something underneath quietly ran out.
I didn't stop. I didn't ask for help. I didn't even fully realize it was happening until I sat down one afternoon to do something I usually love and felt absolutely nothing. Not resistance. Not tiredness. Nothing. Just a flat, blank absence where feeling used to be.
The signs I explained away
Looking back, there were months of smaller signals I rationalized into invisibility. Sleep that didn't restore anything. Irritability that felt disproportionate to every situation. A creeping cynicism I didn't recognize as a symptom, I thought I was just being realistic.
Burnout doesn't always feel like falling apart. Sometimes it feels like going numb.
I stopped enjoying things I'd always loved. I started dreading ordinary tasks I'd done a hundred times without issue. I became very efficient at keeping things moving while feeling entirely disconnected from why any of it mattered.
What actually helped
Not a vacation. I want to say that clearly, because I tried that first, two weeks off, came back, crashed again within a month. A vacation removes the pressure without addressing the structure that created the burnout.
What helped was slower and less glamorous:
- Removing one significant commitment. Actually removing it, not just planning to.
- Telling someone the truth about how I was doing instead of performing fine.
- Starting therapy, which I'd been "about to do" for two years.
- Sleeping. Genuinely, unproductively sleeping.
Recovery from burnout takes longer than you think it should. It takes structural change, not just rest, but a different relationship with how much you agree to carry. The question isn't "how do I recover?" It's "what needs to change so this doesn't happen again?" That one is harder. And more worth asking. 🤍
